The Power of Pride: A Professor's Perspective on Coming Out (2026)

As an educator and an openly queer woman, I've had the privilege of witnessing countless moments of self-discovery and courage. These moments, shared with me by my students, have taught me invaluable lessons about pride and the power it holds.

The fear that often accompanies coming out is palpable. It's a fear I understand intimately, having navigated my own coming-out journey as a college student in the late '90s. Back then, the world seemed preoccupied with Y2K, but for me, it was my identity that caused anxiety.

My Midwestern Catholic college offered little support for queer students. I couldn't simply Google my questions or find a nearby LGBTQ+ community. So, I turned to a novel with a closeted queer protagonist, and it became a mirror to my own experiences.

I decided to use this novel as the basis for an academic assignment, weaving in my own story. It was a risky move, but it was also a crucial step in my self-discovery. Despite receiving a poor grade and a dismissive comment from my professor, the act of self-disclosure was transformative.

Coming out is an intensely personal journey, but it's also a collective experience. It's a process of wrestling with one's truth and sharing it with the world. For my students, it often means confiding in me, their professor, as a trusted confidant.

As I've progressed in my career, I've always been open about my identity, not as a grand gesture, but because hiding is an exhausting endeavor. I'd rather invest my energy in what truly matters: my family, my community, and my work.

These days, I find myself in a unique position. I'm closer in age to my students' parents, and they often approach me as a stand-in for that crucial conversation at home. It's a role I take on with great responsibility, knowing the impact it can have.

When a student shares their truth with me, it's a moment of vulnerability and trust. I respond with gratitude, curiosity, and a sense of pride. I understand the fear they carry, the fear of being a source of anxiety or disappointment for those they love.

In a world that often feels divided, with us versus them rhetoric dominating the headlines, it's more important than ever to foster a sense of pride and belonging. Pride is about more than parades and drag shows; it's about feeling valued, worthy, and confident enough to embrace one's true self.

Shame silences our stories, but pride empowers us to grow and share our authentic selves. It's a powerful force that has the potential to create more love stories, not just during Pride Month, but every day.

As an educator, I'm honored to play a small part in these moments of self-discovery and courage. It's a reminder that, despite the challenges, the world is full of love and acceptance, and we must continue to nurture and celebrate it.
