The Japanese coast is a fascinating place for marine life, especially when it comes to dolphins. The Sea of Japan, nearly enclosed by the Japanese archipelago and the Eurasian continent, behaves like a small ocean with unique currents and weather patterns. This isolation has led to the study of dolphins and porpoises in these coastal waters, revealing intriguing insights into their behavior and presence. The research, conducted by a team at Kyoto University, focused on two bays: Wakasa Bay and Aso Bay. The study utilized passive acoustic monitoring, recording underwater sounds to detect dolphin activity. The results showed that dolphins were present in both bays, with Wakasa Bay recording them on 8.8% of monitoring days and Aso Bay on 12.4%. The clicks and whistles of dolphins were distinct from those of porpoises, with the click detector measuring the ratio of sounds to identify dolphin species. The timing of dolphin appearances varied between the two bays, with Wakasa Bay showing a preference for early morning hours, while Aso Bay had a more consistent pattern of appearances around 5 am and 7 pm, influenced by water temperature and the phase of the moon. The study also noted differences in the whistles of dolphins between the two bays, with Wakasa Bay's whistles having a higher proportion of rising tones, while Aso Bay's whistles were flatter and louder. The findings provide a baseline for conservation efforts, as they reveal when and where dolphins use these bays and what they sound like. The method of passive acoustic monitoring is valuable, as it allows for long-term data collection without the need for direct observation, and it can be used to track the shifting dynamics of the sea and identify specific species. The team plans to continue their research, aiming to improve species identification, individual tracking, and understanding the links between prey and currents. This study highlights the importance of local fishing communities in marine conservation efforts, as they provide valuable insights into the lives of dolphins in familiar coastal waters.
